Students at the HFA 2010 Conference in SarasotaThe 2010 Conference in Sarasota was a success.  It was sold out and over 165 people attended.  Lunch had Humanists from all over the country sitting at tables set up in the hallway to accomodate our group.

Here is some press coverage of our conference - http://www.examiner.com/x-19674-Tampa-Humanism--Freethought-Examiner~y2010m5d2-Historic-Humanist-meeting-happens-in-Sarasota

And as a follow up David Sloan Wilson sent a podcast that he recently was asked to do on the subject of "Inspiring Naturalism." The session lasts about an hour, so be sure to allow ample time for listening! http://scienceblogs.com/evolution/2010/05/inspiring_naturalism.php

Carl Sagan Academy Closes

E-mail Print PDF

With deep regret and disappointment, the Humanists of Florida Association board announces the closing of Carl Sagan Academy. HFA founded the first Humanist-sponsored charter school in 2005. It then appointed a founding board, which created a separate 501(c) 3 organization that separated from HFA.

A majority of the CSA board voted on July 13 at a specially-called public meeting not to appeal the School District of Hillsborough County superintendent's recommendation to close it.  For more information, please read HFA president Jerry Lieberman's commentary in the Fall 2009 newsletter.

You can also read about HFA's other educational initiatives such as the Evolution Institute. You may also visit the Evolution Institute's Web site at http://theevolutioninstitute.org.

Evolution Institute Announcement - March 2008

David Sloan Wilson in the director of the Evolution InstituteEvolution Institute

March 2008

Advocates have their Discovery Institute to market (un)intelligent design to the public. Because of HFA’s and David Sloan Wilson’s vision, our nation soon will have the Evolution Institute to formulate and implement public policy from an evolutionary perspective, and to change the way the public thinks about evolution. There is presently no organization in the United States, or to the best of our knowledge in the world, with this mission.
