Building a Humanist and Secular Coalition

For years, HFA members, as they complete their survey forms at the close of a conference, have expressed that “building a statewide progressive coalition” is their top priority. The April 30-May 2, 2010 conference in Sarasota at the brand new Holiday Inn Conference Center next to the Sarasota Airport will not be HFA’s conference alone.

It will be the first-ever in the state, if not the nation, sponsored by a variety of groups from atheists to Unitarian Universalists in Florida that are interested in promoting freethought, scientific inquiry, critical thinking and Humanism.

Some examples of what you might expect at the 2010 conference are sessions relevant to:

·        Learning about understanding and improving the human condition from the Evolution Institute
  • Raising freethinkers
  • Attracting young families to your group
  • Meeting people that share your values
  • Enjoying life more through critical thinking
  • Creating a community of like-minded people
  • Becoming a part of the political action nationally and in Florida
Speakers include:
  • David Sloan Wilson, co-director of the Evolution Institute
  • Amanda Metskas, coauthor of Raising Freethinkers & executive director of Camp Quest
  • Steven Schafersman, respected author on critical thinking & president of Texas Citizens for Science
  • Lauren Becker, Vice President of OUtreach at the Center for Inquiry
  • Sean Faircloth, executive director of Secular Coalition of America
  • Ana Lita, Founding Director of the AHA's Appignani Bioethics Center
Twenty local organizations are contributing toward the event’s success. This represents a marvelous opportunity to share ideas and experiences, identify areas of common interest we can work on in the state and create a forum that will result in greater cooperation as we consider projects on which we can collaborate. But the subject matter is not limited in appeal to Floridians alone: A representative from the Center for Inquiry and a representative from the American Humanist Association serve on our planning committee, and others from each organization will participate in the conference.
