Along with the University of Arizona’s Frances McClelland Institute for Children, Youth and Families, the Humanists of Florida Association is cosponsoring its second EI workshop, which is scheduled October 30 through November 2 in Tucson. Several participants from the first workshop last November at the University of Miami – including co-directors David Sloan Wilson and Jerry Lieberman – who convened to explore the bases of early childhood learning, will assemble with colleagues from the United States and other nations to consider at-risk adolescent behavior from an evolutionary perspective.
The institute will have only two weeks to transition from the University of Arizona workshop to the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent), NSF-financed workshop in Durham, N.C. to address the problems with regulating large organizations. This is a very timely topic, given the recent near-collapse of global markets and the efforts now to determine how this can be avoided in the future. The program at NESCent will grapple with the question: Where does our nature as a species fit into this complex issue? EI has invited 35 people to participate including natural scientists, social scientists, practitioners and representatives of governmental and regulatory agencies.
