Risky Adolescent Behavior

Gain an evolutionary perspective on troublesome teen behaviors such as bullying, teen pregnancy and “sensation seeking,” in general. Participants at the workshop shared how these behaviors were once adaptive in hunter-gatherer societies. The task at-hand is to devise preventions and interventions that recognize the roots of risky behaviors and go beyond the present Mental Health model in addressing them.

Note: Virginia Kohl - Executive Director of HFA specifically recommend Bruce Ellis’ introduction to the evolutionary model, Jay Belsky’s discussion of reproductive strategies in females, Ron Dahl’s research on neuro-affective changes at puberty, Mark Finn’s work with hormone profiles and emotional regulation, Pat Hawley’s and Tony Volk’s contributions towards a better understanding of bullying and power in peer relationships, and Dennis Embry’s view of using evolutionary theory to inform prevention and policy.

What is Involved in Building a Humanist and Secular Coalition

Building a Humanist and Secular Coalition

For years, HFA members, as they complete their survey forms at the close of a conference, have expressed that “building a statewide progressive coalition” is their top priority. The April 30-May 2, 2010 conference in Sarasota at the brand new Holiday Inn Conference Center next to the Sarasota Airport will not be HFA’s conference alone.

It will be the first-ever in the state, if not the nation, sponsored by a variety of groups from atheists to Unitarian Universalists in Florida that are interested in promoting freethought, scientific inquiry, critical thinking and Humanism.

Upcoming Evolution Institute Events

Along with the University of Arizona’s Frances McClelland Institute for Children, Youth and Families, the Humanists of Florida Association is cosponsoring its second EI workshop, which is scheduled October 30 through November 2 in Tucson. Several participants from the first workshop last November at the University of Miami – including co-directors David Sloan Wilson and Jerry Lieberman – who convened to explore the bases of early childhood learning, will assemble with colleagues from the United States and other nations to consider at-risk adolescent behavior from an evolutionary perspective.

The institute will have only two weeks to transition from the University of Arizona workshop to the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center (NESCent), NSF-financed workshop in Durham, N.C. to address the problems with regulating large organizations. This is a very timely topic, given the recent near-collapse of global markets and the efforts now to determine how this can be avoided in the future. The program at NESCent will grapple with the question: Where does our nature as a species fit into this complex issue?  EI has invited 35 people to participate including natural scientists, social scientists, practitioners and representatives of governmental and regulatory agencies.

Keep in touch with future developments on the EI Web site as the institute offers an evolutionary perspective to other important subjects of our time: http://theevolutioninstitute.org
