Fairness for All Families
is a growing coalition that
includes seniors, business leaders, consumer groups and social
justice organizations who are joining together to oppose stripping
away existing employee benefits while barring the passage of future
measures to help Florida families
This broad
coalition is working together to oppose a constitutional amendment
slated for the 2008 ballot that would strip away existing employee
benefits while barring the passage of future measures to help
Florida families.
The backers
of the so-called “Marriage Protection Act” have aimed most of their
comments at taking rights away from committed gay couples obscuring
the fact that their measure is written so broadly that it will take
existing rights away from a wide array of Florida families.
The far
reaching effect of the amendment was driven home by a February 2nd
ruling by the Michigan Court of Appeals that denied domestic
partnership benefits to government and university employees based on
a similar amendment voters passed there in 2004.
If passed,
the amendment would affect a lot of people. Seniors, firefighters,
teachers and police officers all rely on domestic partner benefit
policies in 18 cities and counties across the state. This is in
addition to the same-sex couples whose families would be refused any
and all legal protections.
As
Floridians, we all have a stake in making sure the amendment is
defeated. Whether you are a service organization that picks up the
pieces when family protections are stripped away, or a business
group that knows Florida’s growth depends on a diverse workforce
with competitive benefits. Whether you are a faith congregation
working for tolerance and understanding, or a student group geared
toward social justice, your interests are aligned with those of our
