HFA Goals and Activities

HFA works to promote Freedom and Democracy by inspiring people to use reason and science to create a more compassionate society.  Our focal issues are: Democracy, Science, Education and Community.

HFA has accomplished a tremendous amount in the past few years including:

        Democracy:

  • Held a First Amendment Rally in Brevard County.
  • Held a Democracy not Theocracy Rally in Manatee County.
  • Helped organized state and regional progressive summits.
  • Founded the Florida Progressive Information Network.
  • Been interviewed by reporters for the Miami Herald, the Jacksonville Times Union, the Tampa Tribune and America AM talk radio on theocracy related issues.

Goal: Humanists are dedicated to Democracy as an ethical form of government that allows for individual freedom while promoting personal responsibility.  Our goal is to create a more compassionate society through the use of reason and science.

Our work on behalf of Democracy focuses on 2 main areas.

  • Promoting Democracy over theocracy through defense of the First Amendment
  • Promoting Ethical Government.

Science

  • Organized a state coalition to promote improved science standards in Florida
  • Created a journal on the state of science education in Florida
  • Conducted outreach to media in support of evolution and in opposition to the intelligent design movement currently active in Florida.

Main Goal: Improve Scientific Literacy in the general population.

         Review of Environment:

Scientific Literacy is an essential skill to have in this modern age.  Science and technology are     integral to every aspect of modern life: from what we eat and where we live to how we work.  Knowledge of science determines how effectively we as a society adapt to technological changes, how we will deal with problems such as disease, the environment and even war.  Good citizenship now requires a basic level of scientific literacy.  The price we will pay as a society for not promoting and encouraging scientific literacy could ultimately be our survival as a species.

HFA’s strategy to improve scientific literacy focuses on three main areas:

  • Science Education
  • Science Policy
  • Scientific Ethics

Education

  • Founded the Carl Sagan Academy in Tampa

Goal: HFA wants to popularize science and its peaceful applications and to encourage individual growth aimed toward achieving a more progressive, enlightened and sane society.

Background: Humanists are profoundly committed to the belief that all people can, and do, learn and are dedicated to sustaining and strengthening public education in pursuit of a more enlightened and compassionate society.

HFA’s main Education focus and Goals

  • The Carl Sagan Academies
  • Pre-K Education
  • Play Group Support
  • Private K-12 Schools

Community

  • Helped certify 3 new celebrants in Florida
  • Founded the Humanist Family Network of Florida
  • Provided support and training for over 30 humanist groups around the state.

Goal: HFA will work to create an environment where people may actively and openly practice their humanist life stance, by providing support and services to Humanist communities that embodies the key Humanist principles of “Reason and Compassion in Action.”

Successful integration of our philosophies into society requires the creation of communities with common goals and interests.

    Communities Focus Areas:

  • Local group support – create and support Humanist communities – one community at a time.
  • Celebrants – promote, train, support, etc.
  • Projects  - how can local groups support the work of HFA.
