Questions and
Answers
What is Humanism?
Humanism is the applied-study of what it means to be
a good Human Being. A central belief of Humanists is that people are
capable and responsible for creating the positive changes we want to
see in the world. It is a dynamic force for social change.
What is HFA's Mission?
The Humanists of Florida Association (HFA) promotes
freedom and democracy by inspiring people to use reason and science
to create a more compassionate society. The main issues we work on
are: Democracy, Science, Education and Community.
Who are your members?
HFA represents over 2500 humanists and 30 groups, including Jewish,
Buddhist UU, nonaffliated and secular humanist individuals and
groups.
How are you funded?
HFA is funded entirely through memberships and donations from
members and supporters. HFA has received grant funding for some
projects, but does not receive funding from its umbrella
organization (American Humanist Association). Currently, monies
raised are spent on operations; staff, and for outreach efforts to
sustain and grow projects that promote Democracy, Science, Education
and Community.
How is HFA managed?
Operated as a democratic, membership organization,
HFA has an elected volunteer board of directors that sets policies
and oversees the work of two dedicated staff members. Projects,
programs and initiatives are put into action by volunteers who work
together with staff to ensure that goals are accomplished. The board
oversees and approves the budget and with the assistance of staff,
evaluates projects on an ongoing basis to ensure that we are meeting
our objectives. To me this is a given.
Is HFA associated with any of the
national organizations?
HFA is a chapter of the American Humanist Association and the only
statewide organization promoting Humanism in Florida. We also
partner with several other national and international organizations,
such as the Institute for Humanist Studies, the International
Humanist and Ethical Union, the Secular Student Alliance and the
Secular Coalition of America.
Does HFA get involved in elections?
No. HFA is a 501(c)3 educational association comprised of
individuals and groups who share common values. We work to promote
democracy, science literacy, education and community.
Is HFA anti-religious?
No. Humanism in the philosophy that demands freedom of belief. We
respect to the right of the individual to think and believe as they
best see fit. At HFA we promote the philosophy of Humanism and
recognize that many religlious traditions have embraced this
philosophy and integrated it into their values. We will not and do
not, however, shy away from critique of religion when religion is
used to promote an anti-human repressive agenda.
Does HFA receive
financial support from the AHA?
No. HFA operates on
funds received from our membership only. We do, however, apply for
grants to supplement our income. Money given to the national
organizations does not trickle down to HFA. So, if you want to see
Humanism flourish in Florida, you must support Humanism in Florida
by donating to HFA.
Is
HFA associated with any of the national organizations?
Yes, HFA is an
affiliated subchapter of the American Humanist Association. We also
partner with several other national and international organizations,
such as the Institute for Humanist Studies, the International
Humanist and Ethical Union, the Secular Student Alliance and the
Secular Coalition of America.
